To enter our kindergarten program, students must be 5 years old by September 1 of the school year. In order for a child to be a happy and well-adjusted student in our kindergarten program, experience has shown the following skills should be mastered before entering our program.
- Score at the 5 - 5½ developmental age on the Gesell Developmental Observation
- Able to listen and follow directions given individually or to a group
- Able to participate cooperatively in whole group activities
- Able to move from large group to small group activities quietly and quickly
- Able to attend (focus) during an activity (story, lesson, directions) for 15 minutes or longer
- Able to write name, recognize numbers to 20, and recognize capital and lower case letters of the alphabet
- Identify colors, shapes, "position words" (up, down, over, beside, beneath, etc.)
- Able to control scissors, pencils, throw and catch a beanbag, hop on one foot
- Able to sequence a story in simple pictures or events (first to last)
- Able to communicate through oral expression
Our aim is to accept children who are mature enough in their personal development to function in the classroom without frustration. Please note that each child matures at a different rate and this does not reflect on their personal intelligence.
Each child's readiness for kindergarten is assessed by certified testers who observe each child during a 40-50 minute appointment using the Gesell Developmental Observation. The Gesell is a scientifically-developed and experientially-verified set of observations based on a child's developed coordination and reasoning patterns.
