Westminster Sports Academy

WSA SPORTS ACADEMY

What is the Sports Academy? In lieu of interscholastic teams, the Day School does sponsor a sports training program open to our students and students in the community. The intention of Westminster's Sports Academy is to provide club-level training in a safe and convenient environment without interrupting family time or traveling out of town. Sports academies meet for practice and most games after school on our campus.

In the Westminster sports academies, each player is regularly evaluated and given personal feedback on progress and areas to improve. Skills are learned through instruction of proper technique and supervised application. Using repetitive drills, as well as creative and fun technical training, players learn the proper skill for each sport. A skills sheet that explains how to master each level of training is used to simplify the process and make it objective.

Weekly scrimmages are held within the Academy structure in order to practice what players are learning. Local games are held with other competitive clubs to test skills in a competitive setting. For students interested in league competition, weekend games against local league teams are available. Seasonal tournaments also are scheduled through the U.S. Club Soccer Association and the USAAA Baseball Federation. Part of the fun in playing at this age is competing with friends and learning to be a teammate. The academies provide a great context to see these goals come to fruition.

Westminster's Sports Academy offers a unique environment for growing young men and women of Christian character in addition to outstanding performance.

Who are the coaches and trainers? Teams are coached by regular WSA team coaches, coaches from other local teams and talented WSA parents. Academy players also benefit from individual instruction by Westminster varsity players in the specific sport. These varsity players are hand-picked by the coaches for their skill and ability to relate to younger students. The younger athletes benefit from these mentor relationships with high school students

What are the training fees? The cost is $120 for training for most academy sports. Payment can be made at registration; however a monthly payment option is available.

What is included in my fees? The fees cover the cost of paying the trainers, field rental, umpire costs and some equipment costs. If money is available in the account, weekend tournament fees will be split evenly per participant. Participants in a weekend tournament should expect to pay an additional minimal cost to be included on the tournament roster.

What if my children do not attend school at Westminster? A limited number of spaces are available to students who do not attend Westminster Schools of Augusta. Please contact the sports coordinators for information on how to apply. Occasionally guest players will be invited to play in a weekend tournament if the need arises.

Can a player participate in a recreational league or on a travel team and still be involved with the Academy? Yes, but the Academy is designed so that the best of these options is offered close to home. There is very little overlap if a player chooses to play on another team.

Additionally, players may join the Academy at any time during the season. Athletes may play the entire season or by the month.

Sports Academy Fall 2010 offerings will be listed as soon as that information comes available. Past Programs have included: Baseball, Tennis, Soccer, Football, and Cheerleading
