Got sleep?
It’s no surprise that the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) says that young children and teenagers are sleep-deprived. For that matter, adults aren’t getting much sleep either and most likely are not setting the best example for their children. Some of the statistics from NSF include:
- 67% of kids in the years through middle school aren’t getting adequate (10-12 hours) sleep.
- 42 % of children have televisions in their bedrooms (a real and potential threat to sleep).
- 10% of school-age kids through 4th grade want to, need to, or do fall asleep in school.
Most of us would agree that our children and students need more sleep. The greater challenge is coming up with solutions both on the home and school fronts. There’s simply not a one-sized fits all approach. This is a topic that I’d love to hear your thoughts on. What counsel should I give parents? What can we do as a school? What’s worked for you. As a primer, read the following WSJ article-Waking Up to Young Kids’ Sleep Troubles. I look forward to hearing from you.
