Middle School | Safe-Online Surfing Challenge
The computer department at Westminster has sponsored the Middle School Safe-Online Surfing Challenge (USA-SOS) since October 2010. This program is designed to teach students and parents about Internet safety.
Created by the FBI, the goal of this program is to ensure that participants can recognize and avoid potential dangers associated with the Internet. To accomplish this, the program addresses and defines topics of a serious nature such as seduction, child pornography, solicitation, exploitation, obscenity and online predators.
After two days of training in October, all students are given a posttest, and this quarter, seventh-grader Ellie Lynch’s score ranked her #13 out of 2,335 total seventh grade participants nationwide.
National Merit Scholarship Commended Students
In September, Wes Maddox and David Newton were named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), was given to Principal Menendez.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
