New Varsity Golf Coach Announced for 2018
After six years of coaching and after leading our varsity golf team to a GISA state “final four” finish in 2013 and 2014, George Downs has decided to step down as the head coach. Taking his place as the new varsity head golf coach will be our current middle school coach, Matt Tracy.
Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Matt is not a stranger to Westminster. His wife, Katie (Director of Greenbrier Preschool in Evans, GA.) is a Westminster alum (class of ’95) and they currently have two children in the lower school; Rob, (4th) and Kate (1st).
Coach Matt Tracy graduated from Florida State University and became a professional golfer following college. He moved to Augusta after spending time in Orlando and Atlanta as an assistant golf professional.
He became a PGA Class “A” Golf Professional while at the Augusta Country Club from 2000 to 2010, served as a teaching professional at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club for one year and spent two years as the Head Golf Professional at Champions Retreat before taking the Director of Golf position at The Members Club at Woodcreek in Columbia, SC. After 4 years in Columbia, the family moved back to Augusta and he started his own golf consulting business at the start of 2017.
Tracy was a Junior Golf Director at Augusta CC from 2000 to 2009 where he taught juniors from 4 years old to college players. Several of his students went on to play college golf at schools such as UGA, UNC, Presbyterian College and Sewanee. Athletic Director, Andrew Bryan, stated, “we are excited about his experience, knowledge of the game, and what he brings to the Wildcat golf program. I’m sure our golfers will appreciate how he teaches the game, but also how he makes golf fun for the players.”
The golf team will have tryouts starting February 12th and the 2018 schedule will be announced soon.
