4th Grader Captures Spelling Championship
Pictured above are the participants for the spelling bee. Not pictured is Chloe Russ.
Elijah Dawoud is the spelling champion of Westminster’s Spelling Bee, held on Thursday, Dec. 7, for grades 4-8. As winner, he qualifies to participate in the GISA Middle School Spelling Bee at Mount de Sales Academy in February.
Elijah, a student in Mrs. Shelley’s 4th grade class, captured the championship title by correctly spelling “caravel” and “expatiated” during the 7th round of the annual competition. The second-place finisher was 5th grade student, Tremain Ferguson, who was eliminated with the word “putrefaction.”
Some of the words that stumped the other participants included “enlisted,” “pulmonary,” and “connubial.”
This annual event began with qualifying spelling bees in November in grades 4-8 where every student participated within their individual grade levels. Out of 209 students in grades 4-8, the field was narrowed to the following 11 students, who competed for the winning title:
Grade 4: Elijah Dawoud (winner), Chloe Russ
Grade 5: Tremain Ferguson (runner-up), Hannah Wilson
Grade 6: Arden Pantsari, Abigail Knight
Grade 7: Catherine Farr, Eli Daniel
Grade 8: Eli Scott, Ashley Ball, Brooke Best
Thank you to Ms. Bramhall for organizing and moderating the spelling bee! Congratulations to all of these young people who impressively represented their grade levels and spelling skills in the contest.
Best of luck to Elijah as he heads to Mount de Sales in February!
